So you like what you see and want to join the lab…

Great! I would love to hear from you! Opportunities may exist at any time, and you will find links at the bottom of this page when ads are up. However, especially while the lab is starting up, there may be anticipated openings that are not yet listed. You are welcome to reach out and inquire.

Here is a checklist for when you are considering to cold email (whether it’s me or another lab):

1) Use my name. Correctly spelled. Seriously, I will not read your email otherwise.

2) How did you find out about the lab? This tells me something about how you think and how your background connects to what we do.

3) Be brief. Really. I will likely see your email on a phone screen. The longer your email, the bigger the chance it will be filed for later. And later may well turn to never. You can refer to an attachment.

3) Attachments are in pdf. That ensures that all the energy you put into formatting will be maintained when I read it. It’s strange that I must still write this, but attachments in the form of zip and txt files still persist. Just don’t. I will not open anything else.

4) Don’t tell me about my research and why it is awesome. I know what we do and why it’s awesome. While your enthusiasm is important, I would much rather learn about you. Who are you and how will training in this lab help you as a person and a scientist.

5) You may not have all of the qualifications I ask for in a job ad. Know that I can teach you everything you need to know to flourish in the lab, as long as you are eager to learn and open minded. What I cannot teach you is attitude and personality. Needless to say, I will screen for this when deciding on who joins the lab.
